RESPONSE

TO GENERIC LETTER 89-19, "SAFETY IMPLICATION OF CONTROL SYSTEMS IN LWR NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS," PALO VERDE NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION (TAC NOS. 74975, 74976 AND 74977)

On September 20, 1989, Generic Letter (GL) 89<<19 was issued to all light water'eactor (LWR) licensees and recommended that a system be provided to mitigate main feedwater overfill events for all LWRs that currently do not have such protection.

By letter dated January 22, 1990, Arizona Public Service Company (APS) stated that Palo Verde has a safety-related steam generator overfill protection scheme that meets the objectives of GL 89-19.

Based on our review of your response, we conclude that the Palo Verde design provides an acceptable means of mitigating main feedwater overfill events.

Our Safety Evaluation is enclosed.

This completes our action on GL 89<<19.
