SUBJECT:
ALLEGATION REGARDING INADEQUATE RADIOLOGICAL CONTROLS As discussed in a telephone conversation on March 28,
- 1990, between Mr. J. Levine of your staff and Mr. F. Wenslawski of the NRC Region V Office, we have received an allegation that maintenance was performed on a reactor coolant pump at Palo Verde Unit 2 without proper adherence to radiation protection procedures, in that continuous health physics (HP) coverage was not
- provided, and that frisking required in a Hot Particle Zone was not performed.
In addition, the alleger stated that, due to the current strike involving HP technicians, junior HP technicians are working as senior HP technicians, and Palo Verde is cutting corners on radiological protection in order to get work done.
Due to the safety questions posited by the allegation, we urge you to give this matter your immediate attention.
We request that you inform us of your findings regarding this matter within 30 days.
If you have any questions regarding this letter, please feel free to call me at (415) 943-3717.
Sincerely, bcc:
