(1) Safety Evaluation Report related to the operation of Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1, 2, and 3 (NUREG-0857) Supplement 8 dated May, 1985.

(2) Letter from E. E. Van Brunt Jr. (ANPP) to G. W. Knighton (NRC) dated May 15, 1985, PVNGS Unit 1 'License Conditions, (ANPP-32642).

Dear Mr.,

Knighton:

Reference 1 identifies guide tube wear surveillance as an issue relating to PVNGS Unit 2 which is still outstanding.

APS closed out this issue for Unit 1 by committing to submit the details of the Unit 1 fuel assembly guide tube fretting wear inspection program six months prior to the first Unit 1 refueling outage for staff review and approval (Reference 2). The approved program will be performed by -APS during the first Unit 1 refueling outage, which is expected to begin in March, 1987.

A fuel assembly guide tube fretting wear"inspection program will be implemented for Unit 2. The Unit 2 program is expected to be similar to the program used for Unit 1. However, the scope of the Unit 2 prog'ram will be defined upon com-pletion of the actual Unit 1 inspection and subsequent data analysis. The'nit 2 program will be submitted for staff review and approval six months prior to the first Unit 2 refueling outage. The approved .program will then be performed by APS during the first Unit 2 refueling out'age. J

'I By submittal of this information, we believe the issue of guide tube wear surveillance for Unit 2 has been addressed and the issue can be closed out.

Please contact Mr. William F. Quinn of my staff concerning any questions or additional information on this matter.
