Dear Mr. Knighton:
The referenced letter provided a request to amend the Construction Permits CPPR-142 and 143, to allow the deletion of reactor-coolant system pipe whip restraints and jet impingement shields.
These devices were included in the design to guard against the effects of postulated double-ended guillotine breaks in the reactor coolant system piping,'hich are discussed in CESSAR Section 3.6.
Supporting justi-fication for the request, provided in the referenced letter, included estimates of costs related to the remaining work, as of November 30,
- 1984, and occupational exposure associated with moving and resetting these devices during the life of plant operation to allow inservice inspection.
Even though this request for amending the construction permits was provided by the referenced letter, ANPP has continued to proceed with fabrication, construction and installation of the pipe whip restraints and jet impingement shields.
An updated summary of the remaining work and costs is provided in Attachment l.
In
- summary, as of March 15, 1985, the pipe whip restraints and jet impingement shields are installed in Unit 2 and are awaiting clearance measurements during pre-core hot functional testing.
For Unit 3, the pipe whip restraint saddles are being fabricated and are therefore not installed, and the jet impingement shields are also not installed.
