Dear Mr. Knighton:

Enclosed are draft proposed FSAR changes for your information. These fire protection changes include the revisions to compliance with BRP APCSB 9.5-1 as evaluated in Reference 1. Also included are changes that 1) revise the description of the C02 system,

2) revise hose lengths, 3)revise barrier
ratings,
4) update the location and type of hose cabinets, hose reels, and.

portable extinguishers,

5) revise the detector types provided for the ESF switchgear
rooms,
6) add halon suppression to the remote shutdown panels, and 7) clarify station personnel expected to undergo fire training.

These changes are. considered justified since: 1) changes to the C02 system meet NFPA standards, 2) use of two 75 foot lengths of hose (150 feet total) at selected hose stations enhance suppression capabilities, 3) the revised barrier ratings either meet 10 CFR 50 Appendix R or meet the design that was submitted for an exemption (References 2 and 3), 4) the revised locations and types provide equivalent fire suppression capability, 5) the revised detection system precludes spurious actuation of the C02 system that could have restricted operator

access, 6) the use of halon in conjunction with the 2-hour rated wall ensures an equivalent 3-hour barrier between the remote shutdown trains, 7) only applicable persons require fire training.
