SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MEETINGS REGARDING EQUIPMENT QUALIFICATION AND PUMP TESTING Meetings were held in the applicant's office in Phoenix, Arizona on September 19 and 20, 1984.

The purpose of the meetings was to discuss the status of equipment qualification (September 19) and the resolution of testing problems with the RCS and LPSI pumps (September

20) for Palo Verde.

The agenda for the meetings is shown in Enclosure 1 and the meeting attendees are listed in Enclosures 2 and 3.

The meetings are summarized as follows:

E ui ment Qualification (9/19/84)

The applicant stated that the seismic qualification program for Palo Verde equipment will be completed prior to fuel load on Unit l.

In addition, the program for pump and valve operability and the qualification of mechanical equipment will also be completed prior to fuel load.

The applicant also discussed the status of its environmental qualification

program, as provided in its submittal of September 10, 1984.

At this time the applicant projects that, except for the following items of equipment, the program wi 11 be completed prior to fuel load on Unit 1.

(1) Electric Solenoid Valve - completed by March 1,

1985 (prior to initial criticality)

(2) Radiation Monitor's - testing completed by December 30, 1984, documentation completed by July 31, 1985 (3) Hydrogen Recombiner - testing completed by April 30,

The applicant stated that a final report has been issued regarding resolution of the reactor coolant system (RCS) pump problems.

The report, which is a

revised interim report, includes the results of the demonstration test at Palo Verde Unit 1 with the modified RCS pumps running at operating temperature and pressure.

Following the completion of the demonstration test, RCS pump 2B was disassembled for inspection.

The inspection showed that

( 1) all the bolts for the diffuser and for the suction pipe were firmly in place, (2) there was no indication of cavitation on the diffuser vanes, and (3) all impeller vanes were intact with no signs of cracks.

One of the impeller vanes had a slight indication of cavi-tation.

The staff requested, and the applicant agreed to submit, additional information for this indication.

The applicant also stated that final reports were issued on the low pressure safety injection (LPSI) pump problems concerning intermittant starting and rumbling in a certain flow range.

The applicant said that the intermittant starting problem was resolved by installing a stiffer shaft motor (6 inches versus 5 3/8 inches in diameter).

The rumbling problem is an intermittant noise that is experienced with the LPSI pump when it is operating in the range of 2800-3200 gpm.

Normal operation of the LPSI pump is above the rumble flow range.

The applicant determined that the LPSI pump would run in the rumble range only if the plant were to experience a medium size loss of coolant accident.

For this postulated occurrence, the applicant estimates that the pump would be required for less than 4 hours4.62963e-5 days
0.00111 hours
6.613757e-6 weeks
1.522e-6 months
.

The staff requested, and the applicant agreed to submit, additional information regarding extended pump performance in the rumble range.
