Subject:

Request for Additional Information - Palo Verde Reactor System Components As a result of the meeting held on March 20, 1984 in Bethesda, Maryland regarding certain reactor system components for Palo Verde, we have determined the need for additional information in the following two areas.

At the meeting we were notified that, in addition to removing the thermal sleeves in the safety injection lines, you are also removing the sleeve from the pressurizer surge line.

In order to ensure nozzle structural integrity for the surge line without a sleeve, we request that you submit information regarding the nature and number of occurrences of pressure and thermal transients induced by various flow modes during the expected life span of the surge line.

We also were advised during the course of the meeting that the four "snubbers" (nominally keyways) at the top of the CEA shroud are the first-of-a-kind design being used initially in the CE System 80 reactor internals.

Due to the lack of service experience, additional information is needed to demonstrate that, with the reduced clearances present in the "snubbers" over the designs now in service, these devices can operate reliably for the service life of the internals.

Further, to eliminate confusion, we recommend the use of the term "keyways" in lieu of "snubbers".
