(3)

Letter from E. E. Van Brunt, Jr.,

APS, to R. L.

Tedesco, NRC, dated March 26, 1982.

Dear Mr. Tedesco:

Reference (1) requested APS to describe the extent to which PVNGS deep draft pumps conform to the NRC's "Guidelines for Demonstration of Opera-bility of Deep Draft Pumps."

APS has re-evaluated its original response to the concerns addressed in IE Bulletin 79-,15, reference (2), where we stated that the only safety related pumps at PVNGS of similar configuration to those described in the bulletin were the Essential Spray Pond Pumps manufactured by Bingham-Willamette Co.

Based on this re-evaluation, and the additional description of a deep draft pump discussed in reference (1),

APS concludes that the PVNGS design does not include any safety related deep draft pumps.

The basis for these conclusions are as follows:

l.

In Reference (1), the NRC identifies deep draft pumps as "vertical turbine pumps",

30 to 60 feet in length.

Bingham-".Willamette pumps, at the North Anna, Beaver Valley, and Surry facilities, fit this description based on setting lengths exceeding 50 feet.

However, the

'VNGS pumps set only 20 feet deep; less than half the length of the BW pumps specified in IE Bulletin No. 79-15.

2.

Reference (1) also identifies vibration problems in deep draft pumps due to the flexibilityof the rotor and casing structure.

Bingham-Willamette compared the Palo Verde pump casing structure to that of a deep draft pump supplied to Virginia Electric and Power Company gEPCO).

BW emphasized that the discharge shell on the PVNGS pump was considerably stiffer than the columns on the VEPCO pump.

Addi-tionally, the Essential Spray Pond Pumps are seismically restrained at two elevations, further reducing the effects of vibration.

3.

Finally,. Reference (1) describes operational problems in deep draft pumps due to design and installation deficiencies.

As a result of large setting lengths, most deep draft pumps are subdivided into a series of line shafts and flanged columns.

Improper alignment of these segments may produce, column and/or shaft eccentricities.

How-

ever, the setting length of the PVNGS pumps is short enough to accommodate a "drop-in" design.

This design permits the entire pump assembly to be lowered into the pump pit.

This feature reduces the amount of necessary alignment and provides for easier maintainability.

The above discussion responds to the request made by reference (1) and also updates our response to IE Bulletin 79-15. If you have any questions concerning this matter, please contact me.
