RECIRCULATION INLET NOZZEL SAFE ENDS Gray File Re:

.Dresden Units 2 and 3 and Quad Cities Units 1 and 2 Philadelphia Electric Company.(PECo) has reported-that cracks have been detected in the recirculation system inlet nozzle safe-ends on Peach Bottom Unit 2.. The cracks are located in the zone.near the weld attaching the thermal sleeve to the inside of the safe end.

At the request of NRC, PECo is presenting the ~esults of the inspections to th~ NRC staff in a ~eeting to be held in room P-118 of the Phillips Building in Bethesda, MD on August 30, 1984, starting at 1:00 pm. *

  • Based on discussions wi~h your staff, you are requested to have -

representatives present at the meeting on August 30, 1984 prepared to discuss: 1) the design of the recirculation inlet nozzle safe ends in the Browns Ferry Units :(including material composition, fabrication, etc.), 2) the results of any previous inspections of these safe ends (including inspection procedures) and 3) your plans for* future inspection of the recirculation inlet nozzle safe ends in Browns Ferry Units 1, 2, and 3.

An agenda for the meeting is enclosed.
