Docket No. 50-237 LS05-83-05-069 Mr. Dennis L. Farrar Director of Nuclear Licensing Corrmonwealth Edison Company Post Office Box 767 Chicago, Illinois 60690

Dear Mr. Farrar:

May 31, 1983

SUBJECT:

INTEGRATED ASSESSMENT FOLLOWUP ITEM - TURBINE MISSILES

( IPSAR ITEM 4.6) - D.RESDEN NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNIT 2 By letter dated October 8, 1982, you provided a resnonse to the open items identified in the Integrated Plant Safety Assessment Report (IPSAR) for

.Dresden Unit 2 (NUREG-0823).

Your response provided the schedule and basis for the turbine rotor inspection at Dresden Unit 2.

The staff has reviewed your response to detennine its interim acceptab'i*lity,

.pending review of a generic General Electric (GE) rep.ort describing their models and methods for relating missile generation probabili'ti1es to turbine maintenance procedures and schedules. General Electric intends to submit such a r.egort to the NRC for review by June 1983.

111-The staff finds that the Dresden Station maintenance procedures and schedules, ~described in the final Safety Evaluation Report for Topic III-4.B and Section 4.6 of the IPSAR, constitute adequate interim assurance of the low probability for turbine missile generation, until a generically-basgd maintenance and inspection program can be established for your facility.

Should the results of the generic GE models and methods indicate the need for a change to your existing maintenance and inspection program, such changes

  • wi 11 be imp l~mented generically for a 11 facilities with GE turbines fo 11 owing completion of the staff's review.

Consequently_, the staff concludes that the action described in Section 4.6 of the IPSAR for Dresden Unit 2 1s complete.
