Environmental Qualification of Safety-Related Electrica Equipment - Request for Additional Information Re:
Dre~den-Unit 3 and Quad Cities Units 1 and 2 We are currently reviewing your submittals 1n response to our Safety Evaluations on environmental qua11f1cat1on of safety-related electrical equipment for the referenced facilities. Certain. addft1ona1 1rlfonnat1on is necessary in order for us to complete qur reviews.
We have detennined that the main steam line break (MSLB) is th~ limiting accident for establishing equipment qualification temperature profiles in BWR containments; your submittals-referenced the recirculat1on11ne break (LOCA) analyses. Although you reported the results of MSLB analyses for Quad Cities 1 and 2, no supporting information was provided.
No MSLB analysis was available for Dresden 3.
As discussed 1n the enclosed Request
- for Additional Information, performance of the plant... specific analyses, or your adoption of an acceptable generic containment temperature qualifica-tion profile, is requested.
Please inform us within 45 days of receipt of this letter regarding your intent to adopt the generic profile or to perform the plant-specific analyses and provide a schedule for subm1tt1ng that information. -
The reporting and/or recordkeep1ng requ1r1ements contained i*n this letter affect fewer than ten respondents; therefore, o~m clearance is not required under* P.L 96-511.

The NRC staff has detennined that*the main steam line break (MSLB) is the*
limiting accident resulting in peak.containment ~ereperatures in.*BWRs, for the purpose of establishing equipment qualification profiles. Therefore, the staff requests Commonwealth Edison to perfonn and submit MSLB analyses for Dresden, Unit 3 and Quad.Cities, *u~its 1 and 2. These.. anaiyses should be perfo.rmed in accordance with the guidelin.es of NUREG-0588 and should cover a spectrum of.break sizes to determine the worst case; i.e., maximum*
temperature.
Al though Commonweal th Edi son reported the results o.f ~LB
. analyses for Quad Cities, Units 1 and 2, no supporting information was pro-vided.
NoMSLB analysis was available for Dresden, Unit 3. In lieu* of providing the MSLB analyses *for.. these plants, it would be acceptable for*
Commonwealth Edison to adopt the generic BWR ternperat~re profile of Figure C-1 of ~JREG-0588. The peak contadnment tempera tu re from this curve.. is 340°F.
Commonwealth Edison should ;nform the NRC staff of their intended action for establishing cont~.inment qualification temperafure profiles within 45 days of receipt of thi~ request.
