Dear Mr. Curtis:
SUBJECT:
REACTOR VESSEL STEAM DRYER, STEAM DRYER SUPPORT BRACKET, AND CORE SPRAY PIPING CRACKS - SUS(UEHANNA UNIT 1 On March 4, 1985, Pennsylvania Power and Light Company reported a significant crack in one of four steam dryer support brackets and cracking in the dryer itself.
On l'larch 19, 1985, further in-vessel visual examinations detected crack like indications in the core spray sparger junction boxes "C" and "D".
Subsequently it was determined that only the "D" junction box contained a
crack.
As a result of these problems discovered during the Unit 1 refueling outage the NRC staff requested that PP8L provide all pertinent information pertaining to the above, prior to start-up following the first refueling outage.
On May 14, 1985 PPlmL provided the staff with a submittal addressing these problems.
The staff has informally reviewed this information and found it to be adequate in addressing the staff's concerns.
As a result the NRC staff will formally issue a Safety Evaluation based on all information provided by PP8L in the near future.
The NRC staff has been in close contact with your staff during these repairs and additionally Region I has provided field support in assessing the adequacy of PPSL's repair techniques and procedures.
The staff has found your repairs to be acceptable.
The purpose of this letter is to confirm that the Unit 1 start-up date should not be delayed as a result of these initial problems.
