SUBJECT:

PROPOSED SCHEDULE REGARDING GENERIC LETTER 96-01 NINE MILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION UNIT NO.

1 (TAC NO. M94701)

Dear Hr. Sylvia:

By letter dated April 18,

1996, as supplemented August 14,
1996, y'ou responded to Generic-Letter (GL) 96-01, "Testing of Safety-Related Logic Circuits,"

dated January 10, 1996, for Nine Nile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No.

1 (NMPl).

Your response noted that the actions requested by GL 96-01 could not be completed to the schedule requested by GL 96-01 (i.e., prior to startup from the first refueling outage commencing 1 year after issuance of the GL).

Rather, you stated that GL 96-01 activities were scheduled to be completed prior to startup from refueling outage 15 which, at that time, was scheduled to occur during the spring of 1999.

Subsequently, as indicated in the NRC's letter of Hay 8,

1997, an unrelated matter associated with the core shroud has resulted in the current operating cycle being limited to 10,600 hours0.00694 days
0.167 hours
9.920635e-4 weeks
2.283e-4 months
of hot operation (about 14-1/2 months); rather than the previously planned 24 months.

We request that you complete the actions needed to resolve GL 96-01 prior to restarting from the shutdown for the core shroud inspection.

If this is not acceptable, you.should notify the NRC staff in writing within 45 days.

Sincerely, ORIGINAL SIGNED BY:
