Dear Mr. Burkhardt:

SUBJECT:

CLOSEOUT OF

RESPONSE

TO BULLETIN 90 NINE MILE POINT NUCLEAR STATION, UNIT NOS.

1 AND 2 (TAC NOS.

76341 AND 76755)

On April 20, 1990, the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (the licensee) responded to NRC Bulletin 90-02, Loss of Thermal Margin Caused by Channel Box Bow, for the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2

(NMP-1 and 2).

Bulletin 90-02 was issued on March 20, 1990, to request that licensees determine whether any channel boxes are being reused after their first bundle lifetime and, if so, to ensure that the effects of channel box bow on the critical power ratio are properly taken into account.

The response of the Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation for both of the NMP-1 and 2 units stated that channel boxes are not presently reused after their first bundle lifetime.

The response also stated that minimum critical power ratio limits for current and future reload cycles will reflect the effects of channel box bow.

The staff finds that the licensee's response meets the requirements of Bulletin 90-02 and, therefore, staff activities pursuant to TAC Nos.

76341 and 76755 are complete.

Sincerely, Robert E. Hartin, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate I-1 Division of Reactor Projects - I/II Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation POI-1 gV p
