A special
safety inspection
was conducted
by Mr. H. Bicehouse of this office on
May 26-27,
1987 of the circumstances
surrounding
a radioactive materials
shipment
from Nine Mile Point-Unit
1 to the Brunswick Steam Electric Plant
on
May 15-16,
1987.
Our findings were discussed
with Messrs.
T. Perkins
and
T.
Roman
and others of your staff at the conclusion of the inspection
on
May 27,
1987.
The areas
examined during this inspection
are described
in the
NRC Region I
Znspection
Report which is enclosed with this letter.
The inspection indicated
that your radioactive materials
shipment of contaminated
Control
Rod Blade
Shearing
Equipment
on May 15,
1987
had apparent violations of requirements
for
surface external
radiation levels at contact,
packaging
requirements
and
an
apparent repetitive violation concerning
Iron-55 which was the subject of our
Notice of Violation issued
as
a result of Inspection
No. 50-220/86-15.

30,
1987 at

Prussia,
The need for and nature of appropriate
enforcement
