Docket No. 50-410 Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation ATTN:

Mr. C.

V. Mangan Senior Vice President c/o Miss Catherine R. Seibert 300 Erie Boulevard West

Syracuse, New York 13202 Gentlemen:

Subject:

NRC Region I Inspections The purpose of this letter is to solicit more detailed schedular information that will assist us in further developing our inspection program for Nine Mile Point Unit 2.

Based upon your estimated facility readiness for fuel

load, we intend to conduct inspections in a

number of areas before this milestone in order to ascertain operational readiness.

The specific areas are listed in the enclosure to this letter.

Me request that a

schedule be provided that indicates when each area will be complete and ready to undergo a detailed NRC inspection.

The schedule should be sufficiently detailed to di stingui sh among the various subelements of the areas listed.

Such information will assist us in effectively managing our ef-forts and resources.

Based upon our prior experience with other recent NTOL facilities, it is not advantageous from a

resource expenditure standpoint to conduct multiple inspections in a given area.

Accordingly, it would be appro-priate to update your response, preferably on a monthly basis, to keep the pro-jected schedule current.

The information in your response will be one of the factors considered by us in scheduling the nature and number of inspections.

These inspections wi 11 form the basis for Region I in making a determination as to the state of opera-tional readiness of the facility for fuel load.

A written response is requested as soon as possible.

Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.

Sincerely, PDR ADOCK 05000>4R10 G.

Richard M. Starostecki, Director Division of Reactor Projects
