Docket No.:

50-410 APPLICANT:

Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC)

FACILITY:

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 2 (NMP-2)

SUBJECT'UMMARY OF MEETING WITH NMPC CONCERNING NMP-2 COMPLIANCE WITH GDC 51 AND BREAK ANALYSIS OF THE REACTOR WATER CLEANUP LINE On January 3, 1985, the NRC staff met with representatives from NMPC, as well as representatives from Stone and Webster Engineering Corporation (SWEC) in Bethesda, Maryland.

Two topics were discussed:

NMP-2 compliance with GDC 51 and break analysis of the reactor water cleanup (RCWU) line.

The December 3, 1984, submittal on GDC 51 from NMPC was used as a basis for discussion for NMP-2 compliance.

Additional information necessary for the NRC to complete its review was identified.

This information included:

1)

CMTR for penetration 2-14 fluid head 2) discussion of mill practices and heat treatment for SA 106 grade piping (CSH pipe, HPCS injection line) 3)

PLSMT of CSH, ASME III class 2, between HPCS test isolation valve and the HPCS test throttling valve should be 70'F instead of 107'F 4)

CSH sockolets/weldolets (item 4k) - confirmation that these components will not see less than 69'F under pressure.

On December 12, 1984,NMPC, in response to a staff concern, submitted a

discussion on the use of break exclusion zone for the reactor water clean-up (RWCU) line.

The NRC staff discussed the purpose of break exclusion and stated that use of break exclusion for this line is inappropriate.

A break should be postulated at least at the junction of the feedwater line and the RWCU line as experience has shown this to be a high stress point.

Pipe whip and jet impingement should be considered.

A list of meeting attendees is Enclosed.
