I Docket No.: 50-410 0
UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D. C. 20555 MAY 24 1984 APPLICANT:
Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC)
FACILITY:
Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit 2
SUBJECT:
SUMMARY
OF MEETING WITH NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION (NMPC)
ON GEOSCIENCES ISSUES RELATED TO THE OPERATING LICENSE REVIEW FOR NINE MILE POINT, UNIT 2 On March 27, 1984, the NRC staff met with representatives from Niagara MIohawk Power Corporation in Bethesda, Maryland, to discuss geoscience issues related to Nine Mile Point Unit 2.
A copy of the agenda used as a basis for the meet-ing is included as Attachment l.
In additio~ to the agenda the discussions held were based on the open items from the draft SER in Section 2.5.
Seismolo
'The only outstanding issue in the seismology area in the Nine Mile Point 2 draft SER concerned the amplification factor of ground motion for the Category I duct bank founded on fill (F230.6).
The applicant proposed to do an analysis using SHAKE CODE.
The input will include three earthquake time histories, recorded on rock, input at the rock fill interface.
The time history will have spectra phich'nvelop R.
G.
160 anchored at 0.15g.
, Geoloqe Regional Stresses:
In ~esponding to the concern in the draft SER on decoupling of stresses of the
- crust, NMPC is to provide a discussion and report of a study done at Auburn, N. Y.,
dealing with basement
- stresses, that will address this issue.
Cooling Tower Fault:
o NMPC to summarize why monitoring is not necessary o
NMPC to provide additional information nn Coates study to address concern on diapiric structures o
NMPC to provide a
new figure with exact location of'rench
- 2. If trench number 2 does not cross the fault line an explanation is to be provided.

V Depth of Burial:
The present information on depth of burial provided by NMPC may not be conserva-tive. If NMPC is to use the stress history calculations to show that present day stresses cannot provide further movement of the Cooling Tower Fault they should recalculate using shallower depths than assummed in the original calculations.
Geotechnical Radwaste Fault:
NMPC will supply additional information concerning how the Radwaste Fault was considered in the design of structures other than the Radwaste Building.
This information is to be submitted by the June 1984 amendment.
iLfquefacti on;= ~
Analysis for liquefaction, is to be submitted in the May 1984 amendment.
Instrumentation Data:
An update of slope inclinometer and rock extensometer data through the end of March is to be submitted in the May 1984 amendment.
The NRC will review that information to determine what further information may need to be submitted.
NMPC will be monitoring this data until January 1985.
Revetment Ditch:
More information is to be submitted concerning the dynamic stability of the slopes of the revetment ditch.
Mainstack:
NMPC will submit geological mapping and profiles of the mainstack area in the April 1984 amendment.
The additional information required for Seismology as discussed above is to be submitted in an FSAR amendment in April 1984.
The additional information re-quired for Geology and Geotechnical (except where noted otherwise) as discussed above is to be submitted in an FSAR amendment in June 1984.
A list of meeting attendees included as Attachment 2.
