SAFETY EVALUATION, RADIOLOGICAL CONSEQUENCE ANALYSIS OF LOCA DURING CONTAINMENT PURGING (PORTION OF MPA B-24)

Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station, Unit No.
1 We have completed our review of the radiological consequences of a loss-of-coolant-accident (LOCA) during containment purging at Nine Mile Unit 1 as a
part of Multi-Plant Action (MPA) Item B-24.
The evaluation is based on the reduction of the purge valve isolation system response time from the current value of 60 seconds to 15 seconds or less to assure that purge/vent valves would be closed before the onset of any potential fuel failure"following a LOCA.
We find the radiological consequences of a LOCA during purging at Nine Mile Point Unit 1 to be within the 10 CFR Part 100 dose guideline values.
This conclusion is based on the assumption that purge value isolation system response time will be reduced to 15 seconds or less from the currently specified 60 seconds.
The issues of valve closure time and any changes required to the Technical Specifications remain open and will be the subject of separate correspond-ence for MPA B-24.
The supporting Safety Evaluation is enclosed.
