Subject:

Use of DYWIDAG Threadbar System at Nine Mile Point, Un We have completed our review of your submittal, dated March 18,

1981, the limited use of the DYWIDAG Threadbar System at Nine Mile Point, Uni which you sent in response to our letter of March 5, 1981 and the meeting held in Bethesda, Maryland on March 6, 1981.

Specifically, you requested approval of the DYWIDAG Threadbar System for splicing of reinforcing steel bars in unstaggered applications used in con-junction with doweling at slab-to-wall connections.

You presented calculations for floor slabs in the reactor building which indicate that, under all applicable loading conditions, the maximum stress level in the dowels viill be below 50Ã of the specified yield strength of the bar.

The staff determined that the calculations are acceptable for these locations.

The staff finds that the statistical summaries of strain data, for bar sizes ¹6 through ¹11 at strain levels corresponding to 505 and 90K of the yield strength of the appropriate bar are acceptable Regarding minimum spacing criteria for splices in this application, the staff agrees with your proposal that the minimum clear distance between parallel splices be at least six inches and not less.,than six times the nominal diameter of the bar.

Finally, the staff. finds acceptable the discussion, calculations, and data you submitted to show that the group tensile test is not necessary for this limited application.

Based on your response as indicated above, we approve the u'se of the DYHIDAG,(

Threadbar ystem at Nine Mile Point, Unit 2, in staggered application, subjec't to the following conditions:

I.

Compliance with the applicable provisions of Section III, Division 2 of ASME boiler and Pressure Vessel

Code, 1980 Edition, including the Summer 1980 addenda; 2.

Compliance with the applicable provisions of Sections 7.5 and 7.6 of ACI 349-76 Code, "Code Requirements for.Nuclear Safety Related Concrete Structures."
