Dear Hrg'isc:
SUBJECT:
REVIEW OF FIRE PROTECTION SAFETY EVALUATION SUPPLEMENTARY ITEMS Your final disposition of items 3.1.2(2), 3.1.2(3) and 5.2.1.6 would be appreciated, If we can be of further assistance, please advise.
Sincerely, ggtn81 Slgne4 bV 8008080 //7 mo By letter dated July 22, 1980, you 'were provided a status of the review of supplementary items of the Nine Mile Point, Unit 1, Fire Protection Safety Evaluation Report (SER)
(Amendment No. 33).
Since then, we have completed our review of the final incomplete items which pertain to Sprinkler Systems.
Items 3.1.2(2) and 5.2.1.6, Sprinkler System - Cable Spreading Room, pertai,nJ to your proposed use of a C02 system in lieu of a fixed water system.
In the
'SER, it was the staff's concern that a C02 system alone may not be capable of suppressing a cable spreading room fire.
This is based upon a failure to demonstrate the ability of gaseous suppression systems to effectively extinguish deep seated cable fires; Since information regarding this concern has not been provided, we find that gaseous fire suppression systems are not adequate to protect large concentrations of cables.
Therefore, to meet Section F.3(b)(3) of Appendix A to BTP 9.5-1, you should install a
fiyed water system that satisfies the requirements of NFPA 15 as a backup to the existing cable spreading room C02 system.
Item 3.1.2(3), Sprinkler Systems - Diesel Generator Building, pertains to your proposed use of manual hose stations.
In the SER, it was the staff's concern that the fire protection provided for the areas below both diesel generator rooms may not be adequate.
Manual hose stations installed near the area are the only means of fire suppre&ion.,
Due to the possibility of a fuel oil fire. we find that such stations are inadequate when considering accessibility.
Therefore, to meet Section F.9 of Appendix A to BTP 9.5-1,
'you should install a sprinkler system to protect the areas below bobh diesel generator rooms.
