SUMMARY

OF MEETING WITH NIAGARA MOHAWK POWER CORPORATION ON MAY 7, 1980 On May 7, 1980, representatives from Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NMPC) and Stone and Webster Engineering Company (S8W) met with Region 1 Construction Branch representatives at King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.

The meeting was held at the licensee's request to make a presentation of the biological shield wall weld defect problem.

The attendance list is attached as Appendix A to this summary.

The NMPC representatives presented the problem, i.e.,

a number of shop welds did not meet AWS Dl. 1 requirements.

A description of the biological shield wall was presented.

This included the functional requirements and physical descrip-tion, design criteria, method of fabrication, specification requirements and the gA program of S8W as applied to the biological shield wall, A chronology of events including the discovery of the problem, the engineering investigation and proposed sampling plan for verifying the quality of welds containing a back-ing bar was made.

Metalurgical destructive.

and nondestructive test examination results were presented.

A closure plan to resolve the biological shield wall weld problems was presented.

This consisted of the methodology for examining and evaluating the weld defects, determination of the cause of the weld defects and the erection strategy.

The Region I personnel acknowledged the comments of NMPC and their representa-tives.

NMPC was conformed that due to the weld problems at Nine Mile Point 2, an inspection would be conducted during the week of May 12, 1980 to review the work in progress.
