Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation ATTN: Thomas J. Brosnan Vice President and Chief Engineer 300 Erie Boulevard Hest Syracuse, New York 13202 Gentlemen:

It has been of interest in the nuclear industry that in some reactors fueled with UO , power changes may be followed by an increase in the iodine content in the primary coolant. Data taken yt the X'suruga power reactor from April to May 1970 indicate that following shutdown of the reactor, the I-131 concentration, in the primary coolant increased temporarily by a factor of one hundred or more. In, order to understand this phenomenon better, we request that you obtain measurements at the Nine Mile Point Nuclear Station of primary coolant samples, taken at a frequency consistent with changing operating paxameters, e.g.,

variation in power level and, primary coolant cleanup. Samples taken from gust before shutdown unti1 the iodine content in the primary system levels off would also be important.

We plan to discuss this potential problem at a meeting in our Bethesda office on September 23,, 1971. We request that you send a representative and provide any pertinent data you might have.
