Syracuse, New York 13202 Gentlemen:

Your letter dated September 29, 1972, described a cask drop protection system pxoposed for installation in the Nine Mle Point OkP) Nuclear Station Unit 1.

this proposed system Is essentially the same as that described by Jersey Central Power 6 Light Company for the Oyster Creek Nuclear Geaerating Station in their application for a full-term operating license dated Harch 9, 1972, and supplements thereto dated October 6, 1972, Decmiber 12, l972, and Januaxy 9, 1973.

To expedite our review, you are requested to provide a summary report of your proposal, modified as necessary, by incoxporating the latest appH.cable information submitted by Jersey CentraL in the above-indicated three supplements.

You are also requested to Identify and provide a discussion of any significant difference(s) between the RP Unit, 1 and Oyster Creek'planta as regards the cask drop accident and related coacerns.

Ue are enc1osing a copy of our most recent correspondence with Jersey Central on this matter.

You are requested to include the considerations

'set forth in this enclosed letter in developing the above-indicated summary report.

The additional fnfoxnation and a revised proposal, if necessary, are requested for our review within thirty days from the date of this letter.

Ue have reviewed the proposed modified radioactive off-gas system described in 'the "Technical Supplement to Petition fox Conversion from Provisional Operating License to Pull-Term Operating License" and associated "Environmental Report"

'ubmitted on July 5, 1972.

Based on this information and. statements by your staff that the system gill be constructed in accordance vith the requirements for a Class X structure, ve have concluded that the proposed charcoal delay system villreduce the radioactive off-gas releases from the operation of Nine Mile Point Unit No. 1 to values as loT3 as practicable; and, therefore, me find the proposed system

, acceptable.
