Mr. Bryan C. Hanson Senior Vice President UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 January 19, 2017 Exelon Generation Company, LLC President and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO)

Exelon Nuclear 4300 Winfield Road Warrenville, IL 60555

SUBJECT:

CLINTON POWER STATION, UNIT NO. 1 - ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CONTINUATION OF OPERATIONS

Dear Mr. Hanson:

In a letter dated June 20, 2016 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML16172A137), Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon) submitted its "Certification of Permanent Cessation of Operations" in accordance with Section 50.82(a)(1 )(i) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) for Clinton Power Station, Unit 1 (CPS) and stated that it had decided to permanently cease power operations by June 1, 2017.

Subsequently, by letter dated December 14, 2016 (ADAMS Accession No. ML16349A314),

Exelon withdrew its "Certification of Permanent Cessation of Operations."

As CPS has not permanently ceased power operations and has not submitted a "Certification of Permanent Fuel Removal" in accordance with 10 CFR 50.82(a)(1)(ii), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff acknowledges Exelon's decision to withdraw its certification of permanent cessation of operations and to continue operations at CPS.

Operations at CPS continue to be authorized consistent with the existing Facility Operating License No. NPF-62, which expires on September 29, 2026.

In its December 14, 2016 letter, Exelon also withdrew licensing actions previously submitted in support of its planned shutdown of CPS. NRC action on all licensing actions will be handled in separate correspondence.

If you have questions, you can contact Eva Brown, senior project manager, at 301-415-2315 or Eva.Brown@nrc.gov.
