Mr. Bryan C. Hanson Senior Vice President UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION WASHINGTON, D.C. 20555-0001 January 19, 2017 Exelon Generation Company, LLC President and Chief Nuclear Officer (CNO)
Exelon Nuclear 4300 Winfield Road Warrenville, IL 60555
SUBJECT:
QUAD CITIES NUCLEAR POWER STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 -
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF CONTINUATION OF OPERATIONS
Dear Mr. Hanson:
In a letter dated June 20, 2016 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML16172A151 ), Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon, the licensee), submitted its "Certification of Permanent Cessation of Operations" in accordance with Section 50.82(a)(1 )(i) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) for Quad Cities Nuclear Power Station, Units 1 and 2 (QCNPS) and stated that it had decided to permanently cease power operations by June 1, 2018.
Subsequently, by letter dated December 14, 2016 (ADAMS Accession No. ML16349A311),
Exelon withdrew its "Certification of Permanent Cessation of Operations."
As QCNPS has not permanently ceased power operations and has not submitted a "Certification of Permanent Fuel Removal" in accordance with 10 CFR 50.82(a)(1 )(ii), the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff acknowledges Exelon's decision to withdraw its certification of permanent cessation of operations and to continue operations at QCNPS.
Operations at QCNPS continue to be authorized consistent with the existing Renewed Facility Operating License Nos. DPR-29 and DPR-30 for Units 1 and 2, respectively, which expire on December 14, 2032.
In its December 14, 2016 letter, Exelon also withdrew a license amendment it previously submitted in support of the planned shutdown of QCNPS. NRC action on all licensing actions will be handled in separate correspondence.
