v'NCLOSURE REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (PGSE LETTER DCL-86-105) l.
Your submittal.indicates that the GMR-I canisters will not be used in the presence of organic solvent vapors or in total challenge concentrations of halogenated compounds greater than I ppm.
Describe the methods and particular procedures which will be applied to prevent the use of GMR-I canisters in the presence or organic vapors and chemicals.
This should include a discussion of:
I (a) organic vapors and chemicals of concern to GMR-I use at Diablo Canyon; (b) methods and procedures for detecting (sampling) and/or precluding the presence of organic vapors and chemicals where GMR-I canisters are used (e.g., identify general sampling procedures applied specifically for GMR-I canister use; identify administrative procedures which preclude use or release of organic vapors and chemicals in GMR-I use areas);
(c) related controls for other systems or operations, such as charcoal filter bed technical specifications, which can also limit GMR-I canister exposure to organics.
2.
Identify the specific procedures which will control canister storage and indicate the range of temperature and relative humidity allowed in the storage area.
3.
Describe practices used to keep exposure of workers to radioiodines as low as reasonably achievable.
This should include a general discussion of fuel QA/QC, reactor degasification, coolant purification, utilization of decay
- schemes, and decontamination of systems or areas.
4.
Verify that only fit-tested full facepiece respirators capable of providing a protection factor of 100 or greater will be used with GMR-I canisters.
5.
Verify that only GMR-I canisters from batches which have undergone appropriate quality control and quality assurance (i.e., from MSA's Mi 1 Std 414 batches) will be utilized with a protection factor.
