Dear Mr. Shiffer:

NGrace EJordan

Subject:

Detection and Control of Biofouling ACRS (16)

In June 1984 the report NUREG/CR-3054 was issued to close out IE Bulletin 81-03, on the subject of fouling of safety systems.,

As a result we have initiated an effort to devise means for detecting and controlling fouling agents so that no serious failures could result from any infestation.

This is a long term effort.

In the meantime, we have selected some nuclear power plants with a high potential for biofouling to determine whether utilities have implemented effective surveillance and/or control measures to prevent biofouling in order to minimize the risk of plant damage.

The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant has been selected for this short term determination.

Accordingly we request that you provide the information as identified in the enclosure within 30 days after receipt of this letter.

Sincerely, ORlGlNAl.SlGNEO BY
