Murray, By letter dated June 29, 2016 (Agencywide Documents and Access Management System Accession No. ML16188A269), pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(6)(i), Entergy Nuclear Operations, Inc. (the licensee),

requested relief from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI pertaining to volumetric examinations at the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station (PNPS) on the basis of impracticality. These reliefs are for the Fourth PNPS 10-Year Inservice Inspection Interval which ended June 30, 2015.

This e-mail pertains to the following relief requests:

PNPS-ISI-004 Pressure Retaining Welds in Austenitic Stainless Steel or High Alloy Piping-Inspection Program B PNPS-ISI-005 Risk Informed Piping Welds A draft request for information (RAI) was sent to you for each of the above relief requests on October 17, 2016. You informed me that a clarification call is not required. It was agreed that Entergy will respond to the RAIs with a supplement by November 19, 2016.

(the licensee), submitted Relief Request No. PNPS-ISl-004 for relief from the requirements of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI, Rules for Inservice Inspection of Nuclear Power Plant Components for the Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station. The request for relief applies to the fourth 10-year inservice inspection (ISI) interval.

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff requests that the licensee provide additional information to support the relief from ASME Code Section XI-required volumetric examination of essentially 100% of the welds.

Please describe the relevant Editions and Addenda of ASME Code Section XI that apply to Appendix VIII and non-Appendix VIII examinations.

Please discuss the operational experience for the other core spray dissimilar metal welds and the results of other dissimilar metal core spray weld inspections.

Please describe any surface examinations performed on welds 14-A-10A and 14-B-10A.
