Subject:

Fire Protection Requirements A management meeting was held in the NRC Region II office on February 28, 1984, to discuss the application of 10 CFR 50.48 and 10 CFR 50 Appendix R (Fire Protection) at the Oconee Site.

The following items were discussed in detail:

Appendix R exemptions for Oconee, including the fire barrier separation between the east and west penetration rooms for each unit, cork filler material used in the expansion joints of fire barriers, separation of instrumentation circuits within each reactor building, and emergency lighting units; current outstanding fire protection items which have been identified by Region II; necessary damage control repair procedures required following a fire; and, protection required for associated circuits.

The licensee was advised that an exemption should be submitted to the NRC for any feature which does not technically meet the requirements of 10 CFR 50.48 and the applicable section of Appendix R.

The licensee indicated that portions of the Oconee Appendix R submittals were to be discussed further to verify that the required features were adequately addressed and where applicable, sufficient exemptions would be submitted to the NRC.
