SUMMARY

OF MEETING WITH DUKE ENERGY CORPORATION ON LICENSE RENEWAL ACTIVITIES FOR OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1, 2, AND 3 On March 30, 1998, Duke Energy Corporation (Duke) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) management met to discuss Duke's license renewal activities for Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3 (Oconee). The meeting was requested by Duke to provide background information on the Oconee license renewal efforts, Duke's intentions with respect to submittal of a license renewal application, and support requested from the NRC. A list of meeting attendees is provided in Attachment 1. The Duke presentation materials are contained in Attachment 2.

Duke is committed to license renewal and will continue to pursue it as long as it is economically feasible. The current schedule is to submit an application in July 1998. Duke is planning on a 2-year schedule for completing the technical and environmental reviews with a Commission decision within 3 years. In addition to the Oconee specific activities, Duke plans to continue involvement in industry efforts.

Bi-monthly meetings between NRC and applicant's management were proposed to monitor compliance with the schedule and to address issues that may arise. Duke emphasized that the review process needs to be maintained consistent with the scope of the rule and that timely staff decisions are needed to maintain the schedule. Completion of the NRC's review of.

previously submitted owners group reports is also required as Duke intends to incorporate the reports by reference into their application.

A staff-level public meeting between Duke and the NRC on license renewal activities was also held on March 30, 1998, that is described in a separate meeting summary.
