GENERIC LETTER 98-04 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (TAC NOS. MA4074, MA4075, MA4076)

Using the computer email system, on May 12, 1999, the staff has supplied Duke Energy Corporation the following questions related to the Oconee Nuclear Station Units 1, 2, and 3 reply to Generic Letter (GL) 98-04, "Potential for Degradation of the Emergency Core Cooling System and the Containment Spray System After a Loss-Of-Coolant Accident Because of Construction and Protective Coating Deficiencies and Foreign Material In Containment." The information will be discussed during a conference call.

"The tech staff has reviewed Oconee's response to GL 98-04 and has some followup questions.

A copy of their questions is attached. Please let me know when the licensee would be available for a conference call to discuss the items.

"Oconee 1, 2 & 3 Conference Call Questions

As stated on page 4 of your submittal for Units 3, 'Except for the polar crane, the overall condition of the coatings was satisfactory...The degraded coatings on localized areas of the sprinkler grid system, polar crane, and dome areas have been documented and will continue to be evaluated for possible removal.'

What is the condition of the localized areas of coating degradation in the sprinkler grid system and dome areas being monitored?

Has there been any major recoatings in containment? If so, when and approximately how much area was recoated?"
