STEAM LINE BREAK (UPDATE)
This is an update to the September 24, 1996, Oconee Unit 2 steam line break and manual reactor trip.
Unit 2 is currently in cold shutdown. Loose asbestos in the affected area has been removed and preparations are underway to begin visual examination of the ruptured pipe and associated supports. Current plans include the removal of the affected section of pipe in order to conduct further examinations. In addition to the site's Investigation and Recovery Team (IRT), the licensee's corporate-led Event Investigation Team (EIT) is now onsite. The licensee has also obtained the services of contractors with previous experience in similar events to aid in the root cause analysis.
The onsite NRC special, reactive inspection effort was upgraded this morning to an Augmented Inspection Team (AIT). Accordingly, an exit meeting open to the public and subsequent press conference are planned.
The Team will be further supplemented today with material specialists from the Region and NRR. The Team has interfaced with South Carolina OSHA inspectors, as well as the licensee's IRT and EIT.
The licensee continues to respond to media inquiries. NRC will make a press release regarding the upgrade to an AIT.
