Dear Mr. Parker:

By letter dated March 18, 1981, you requested an exemption to 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, Item III.G.3 for the Oconee Nuclear Station,Units 1, 2 and

3. This exemption would remo ve,the requireme.nt that a fixed fire sup pression system be installed in the,east and west Oenettifion Roms. The, basis for this request is your assertion Rtat since () fire zones,under consideration are effectively s ate fire barrier, (2) fire detection devices are insta ed in both areasand ()

combustible loading is very low for these areas, a fixed fire suppressionsystem fr these areas would not enhance fire protection ae at t Oconee Nuclear Station.

The staff has reviewed your submittal and determined that an exemption to 10 CFR. 50, Appendix R, Item Il..

It s the staff's position however, that an exemption to this requirement is required or the Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2 and 3 Control Roo ms W e, therefore, request that you apply for an exemption to Item G.3 of Appendix R to 10 CFR 50 for the Control Room.
