Enclosure REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION OCONEE SPENT FUEL POOL MODIFICATION
- 1. Provide minimum design margins and design limits for the spent fuel pool in a tabulated form.
A sample format is given below.
TABLE OF MARGINS AND LIMITS COMPONENTS DESIGN LIMIT DESIGN MARGIN*
(PSI)
Concrete 3,000 Steel (R-Bar) 30,000 Liner
- DESIGN MARGIN =
design limit calculated stress
- 2. Provide expected maximum amount of Tateral slide of fuel rack, if any, with respect to liner of the pool.
If no sliding is expected, provide calculated maximum horizontal and vertical uplift forces.
Also provide sliding force (critical) above which one expects the rack to slide.
- 3. Discuss briefly how the sliding forces are calculated.
Describe mathmematical model of interface between fuel assembly and rack and between fuel rack support and bottom pool liner.
- 4. Provide value for the sliding friction for the fuel rack and liner' for a lateral motion. Discuss how the friction value is obtained.
- 5. It appears that, based on the calculation, you concluded that the fuel rack will not slide or sliding will be minimal. The calculation was based on' a highly non-linear analysis (doubly non-linear; one from gap between fuel assemblies and fuel rack and the other non-linearity from sliding friction element between rack and pool liner). Discuss verification of the calculation by an independent means such as experiment.**
- 6. During earthquake, suppose the racks slide laterally contrary to your calculations. What is the safety implication when they slide and impact on side wall of the pool.
Can the pool liner be adequately protected? What.is the thickness of the liner and how is it fastened to the concrete surface?
Our record shows that the WECAN code, the tool for the non-linear analysis, has not been fully reviewed and approved by NRC (see the letter from R. J. Bosnak to J. F. Stolz dated December 22, 1978).
