RAI clarification call SG Weld RR MF6474 Attachments: RR WBN-2 PSI-3 RAI (MF6474).docx Importance: High Bob and Gordon, On July 10, 2014 TVA submitted a request for relief for Watts Bar 2 Preservice Inspections pertaining to inaccessible steam generator welds. The staff has found the submittal to be acceptable for review and has identified information required to complete the safety review; see the attached draft request for additional information (RAI).

As this review is being conducted on a very short schedule, it would be beneficial to have a clarification call next week to discuss the RAIs to facilitate a timely response. Please let me know if your staff is available in the afternoon on Wednesday Aug 12 or Aug 13 to discuss this RAI.

Relief Request WBN-2/PSI-3 states that, Circumferential shell weld on steam generator number 2 (Weld SG-4B-5 lower shell-to-cone weld) is partially inaccessible for examination because of the upper steam generator support bracket. Describe what it takes to increase the volumetric examination coverage beyond 24 percent reported in the relief request. Also, without explanation,it is hard to confirm from Drawing ISI-2001-E-03 that your best effort will result in a coverage of only 24 percent. Please provide this explanation.

Provide the preservice inspection results and disposition of indications forWeld SG-4B-5-2 for Unit 2. If the steam generator of Unit 1 was fabricated by the same manufacturer around the similar time as Unit 2, provide corresoponding information of Unit 1 to supplement the limited inspection information for Unit 2.

RAI-3

Provide one or two more industry precedents regarding inspection of IWC-2500-1 Category C-A or C-B items for multiple vessels in a unit, with examination coverage less than 50 %.
