OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION, UNITS 1, 2 AND 3 RE: USE OF ALTERNATIVE WELD MATERIALS IN REPLACEMENT STEAM GENERATORS (TAC NOS. MA6209, MA6210, AND MA6211)

Dear Mr. McCollum:

By letter dated August 6, 1999, Duke Energy Corporation requested relief to use the alternative rules of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiling and Pressure Vessel Code on certain weld materials in replacement steam generators that are being manufactured for the Oconee Nuclear Station, Units 1, 2, and 3. As an alternative to the Code requirements, your relief request proposed use of ASME Code Cases 2142-1 and 2143-1.

On the basis of the enclosed safety evaluation, the staff has determined that the proposed alternative would provide an acceptable level of quality and safety. Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i), the staff hereby authorizes the use of the proposed alternative.
