CATAWBA, MCGUIRE, AND OCONEE NUCLEAR STATIONS - REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING REQUEST FOR RELIEF FROM TEST REQUIREMENTS FOR PRESSURE RETAINING BOLTING (TACs MA1504, MA1505, MA1509, MA1510, MA1513, MA1514, AND MA1515)

Dear Mr. Tuckman:

By letter dated April 6, 1998, you submitted a request for relief from the bolt torque or tension test requirements for pressure retaining bolting of Class MC pressure retaining components and metallic liners of Class CC components, as specified in the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,Section XI.

The staff's review of your request indicates that additional information is needed. Specifically, please explain how the tension and torque pre-loads and the physical conditions (e.g.,

indications of rusting, corrosion, or flaking of bolt heads) of the bolts used for pressure unseating containment penetrations are monitored and maintained. As applicable, also provide the procedures used to monitor and maintain the functionality of these bolts for the pressure unseating containment penetrations and a list of all penetrations for each of the containments requesting the relief.

Please provide your response within 15 days of receipt of this letter. This schedule is needed to support your requested NRC response date of July 1, 1998.
