September 4, 2014 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Page 2 to control rod drive mechanism (CROM) penetration (housing) nozzle wear under request for additional information (RAI) B.2.1.5-1 a.

As noted in the response to RAI B.2.1.5-1 a, Exelon plans to supplement that response with the results of the detailed analysis in November, 2014. This letter provides an interim update to the RAI B.2.1.5-1 a response.

Westinghouse Electric Company, the firm that is performing this analysis, has recently provided Exelon with confirmation that there is confidence that the final analysis will demonstrate ASME Code qualification for the CROM penetration nozzle with the maximum possible wear depth of 0.1075 inches, thus ensuring that this wear will not impact CROM penetration nozzle integrity at BBS. Consistent with earlier communications, the final detailed analysis is scheduled to be completed in October 2014, with the results to be provided to the NRC in November, 2014.

If the detailed analysis finds that the ASME Code acceptance criteria cannot be met for the maximum possible wear depth of 0.1075 inches, or if after completing their review the staff does not find the analysis acceptable, then Exelon will make a commitment to repair or replace the CROM penetration nozzles exhibiting indications of thermal sleeve centering pad wear.

There are no new or revised regulatory commitments contained in this letter.
