AUG 14 1981 Docket Nos. 50-325/324/261 Mr. Richard E. Jones Associate General Counsel Carolina Power and Light Company 10 P. 0. Box 1551
- 0 S
Raleigh, North Carolina 27602
Dear Mr. Jones:
SUBJECT:
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALIFICATION OF SAFETY-RELATED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT RE:
BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT NO. 1 & 2, AND H. 8. ROBINSON STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNITNO. 2 Your letters of June 17 and June 26, 1981 requested a hearing concerning the subject. As a-result of our letter of July 7, 1981, your request has been held in abeyance until ninety days after the date of issuance-of the Safety Evaluation for the facilities.
On July 31, 1981, the NRC staff recommended to the Commission, in response to an industry petition, that the June 30, 1982 deadline for equipment qualification be extended to June 30, 1983, with limited provisions for further extensions on a case-by-case basis.- In addition, the NRC staff has provided clarifications on many of the technical issues in this area.
The underlying reasons for your original request, regarding a hearing, may be affected by the Commissign's action on the staff's submittal or recent staff interpretations of the re uirements. Therefore, in order to allow you to consider all recent or <Q i evelopments, we will, upon your affirmation, hold your original request in abeyance for up to thirty days after the Commission has completed its action on the petition.
By that time, we ask that you inform us of your inte, an f you pursue a hearing, of the specific issues you intend to raise inr-the-#oceeding.
Your response to this letter, affirming or rejecting this course of action, isreqested by September 1,1981. We will continue to solicit your cooper ation in the identification and resolution of disputed technical issues.
For additional information, contact Jim Lieberman (301-492-7267), Office of the Executive Legal Director, or Mark Williams (301-492-9798). Please send a copy of your response to Mr. Williams via telecopy (301-492-7617).
