Dear Mr. Utley:

BKGrimes (9A2)

SUBJECT:

H. B. ROBINSON STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT, UNIT NO 2, AND SHEARON HARRIS NUCLEAR POWER PLANT, UNIT 1 - RESPONSE TO GENERIC LETTER 88-05 (TAC NOS. 68493, 68922)

On March 17, 1988, the NRC staff issued Generic Letter 88-05, "Boric Acid Corrosion of Carbon Steel Reactor Boundary Components in PWR Plants."

In that letter, we requested that you provide assurances that a program has been implemented at your plants that addresses the corrosive effects of reactor coolant system leakage considerations which your program should include.

In a letter dated May 27, 1988, you responded to Generic Letter 88-05 describing your commitment to boric acid leakage monitoring and preventive programs at the H. B. Robinson Steam Electric Plant, Unit No. 2, and the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant, Unit 1. We find that you have provided assurance that the programs dealing with boric acid leakage that potentially could affect the integrity of the reactor coolant pressure boundary will be in place. This commitment along with your current efforts to prevent boric acid corrosion fulfills your requirement in responding to Generic Letter 88-05.

As discussed in Generic Letter 88-05, you should maintain, in auditable form, records of the programs and results obtained when the programs are implemented.

This completes our efforts regarding your response to Generic Letter 88-05.

Sincerely, Ronnie Lo, Senior Project Manager Project Directorate 11-1 Division of Reactor Projects I/II cc:
