BOARD NOTIFICATION - INCORRECT WEIGHTS FOR VALVES
, MANUFACTURED BY VELAN ENGINEERING CORPORATION We recommend that IE Bulletin No. 79-04, and the memorandum from F.
Clemenson to V. Noonan dated April 9, 1979 be provided to the Robinson 2 Board (Power Increase).
Bulletin 79-04 denotes that incorrect weights, actual weights higher than presumed weights, for check valves made by the Velan Corporation may have been used in piping stress analyses. This may result in non conservative calculated stresses in affected piping systems.
The April 9, 1979 memorandum summarizes a visit to Velan Corporation, As noted, Velan is reviewing weight related data on gate and globe, as well as check valves, which they supplied to the nuclear industry.
Evaluations by the industry and the staff of this issue are expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
This issue, errors in valve weights, is related to IE Bulletin 79-07 (Seismic Stress Analysis of Safety-Related Piping) which we recommended by our April 19, 1979 memo be provided to the Robinson 2 Board.
