PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION-REGION III April 29, 2014 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE-PNO-III-14-005A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. Some of the information may not yet be fully verified or evaluated by the Region III staff.

UPDATE TO DRESDEN UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN DUE TO MAIN TRANSFORMER DAMAGE This Preliminary Notification provides an update to PNO-III-14-005, which addressed an April 12, 2014, shutdown when the Main Transformer sudden pressure relays actuated resulting in a generator trip and reactor trip. The main transformer takes electricity from the generator and sends it to the switchyard.

The licensee replaced the Unit 2 Main Transformer with a spare which was on site, performed testing and then restarted the unit. The licensee restarted the reactor on Saturday, April 26, 2014 and the generator was placed on the grid on April 28, 2014. NRC Resident Inspectors observed the licensees response to the plant transient and restarting activities.

This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated.

Region III received initial notification of this occurrence by the NRC Resident Inspectors. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 1:00 p.m. (CDT) on April 29, 2014.

The State of Illinois has been informed.
