DRESDEN UNIT 2 SHUTDOWN DUE TO MAIN TRANSFORMER DAMAGE On April 12, 2014, Dresden, Unit 2 was operating at full power when the actuation of the Main Transformer sudden pressure relays resulted in a generator trip and reactor trip.
The NRC Resident Inspectors responded to the site upon notification and monitored the licensees response to the plant transient, including their efforts to address the equipment damage.
There were no releases of radioactive material from Dresden, Unit 2 due to this event, and no significant issues were identified by the licensee or the NRC Resident Inspectors associated with the shutdown.
The licensee plans to replace the damaged main transformer with a spare which is currently on site. This shutdown is expected to last more than 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />.
This preliminary notification is issued for information only and no further action by the staff is anticipated.
Region III received initial notification of this occurrence by the NRC Resident Inspectors. The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee, and is current as of 10:00 am CDT, on April 15, 2014.
