PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-13004 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.
Facility Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 2 Entergy Russellville, Arkansas Dockets: 05000368 License Nos. NPF-6 Licensee Emergency Classification X Notification of Unusual Event Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable
SUBJECT:
ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE, UNIT 2, NOTIFICATION OF UNUSUAL EVENT
DESCRIPTION:
On December 9, 2013, at approximately 7:49 a.m. (CST), Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO), Unit 2 which was operating at 100 percent power, experienced an explosion and fire in the Unit 2 auxiliary transformer resulting in a reactor trip. The auxiliary transformer was supplying power to the safety and non-safety buses from the output of the Unit 2 main generator at the time of the explosion. As a result of the event, normal off-site power to one bus was lost and the emergency diesel generator is providing power to that bus. The licensee is currently performing a plant cooldown to cold shutdown.
At 8:00 a.m. (CST) the licensee declared a Notice of Unusual Event.
Unit 1 is currently operating at 98 percent with electrical buses powered from their normal supplies.
The State of Arkansas was notified.
The NRC resident inspectors responded to ANO, and are monitoring the licensee's actions.
The Region IV office received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the Senior Resident Inspector on December 9, at 7:51 a.m. (CST). This information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 1:17 p.m. (CST) on December 9, 2013.
