The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV staff on this date.

SUBJECT:

INADVERTENT ACTUATION OF EMERGENCY SIRENS IN THE VICINITY OF ARKANSAS NUCLEAR ONE DESCRIPTION:

On November 14, 2002, up to three emergency sirens in the vicinity of Arkansas Nuclear One and Russellville, Arkansas, inadvertently actuated due to a power fluctuation. The sirens silenced automatically after approximately 3 minutes. The Arkansas Department of Health is evaluating the siren actuation to determine if corrective maintenance is required.

The actuation of the sirens prompted numerous calls from citizens to local law enforcement agencies.

Local radio stations are periodically broadcasting information to inform the local residents of the reason for the siren actuation.

The state of Arkansas was informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence by telephone from the NRC Headquarters Operations Officer at 10:53 a.m. (CST) on November 14, 2002. Region IV has informed the EDO and PA.

This information has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 1:30 p.m. (CST) on November 14, 2002.
