Docket No. 50-206 Monitoring of Control Rod Position San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 In accordance with your letter dated November 5, 1979, we indicated by letter dated December 19, 1979 that control rod misalignment limitations are not presently included in the technical specifications. We also stated that an evaluation, in conjunction with Westinghouse, was underway to determine corrective actions required to assure that control rod misalignment and instrument inaccuracy are accounted for when monitoring control rod position.
Based on discussions with Westinghouse during the week of December 17, 1979, the core design for San Onofre contains a + 12.5 inch margin.allowance for rod misalignment. This allowance is sufficient to accommodate both the measurement uncertainty of the analog indicators plus a reasonable operational band. Accordingly, we intend to submit a request for license amendment revising our technical specifications to limit control rod misalignment to the appropriate limit. The Westinghouse Standard Technical Specifications forwarded with your November 5, 1979 letter will be utilized, with station specific data (such as the 3/8 inch step size of the San-Onofre rod drives), in preparing a proposed change to our technical specifications.
It is currently expected that the request for license amendment can be submitted by February 15, 1980.
