Southern California Edison Company P. 0. BOX 800 2244 WALNUT GROV.E AVENUE ROSEMEAD, CALIFORNIA 91770 K. P. BASKIN TELEPHONE

MANAGER, GENERATION ENGINEERING July 3, 1979 213-572-1401 Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation Attention:

Mr. D. L. Ziemann, Chief Operating Reactors Branch #2 Division of Operating Reactors U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555 REGULATORY K

Gentlemen:

Subject:

Docket No. 50-206, Provisional Operating License No. DPR-13 Information Requested on Feedwater Lines San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 By letter dated June 18, 1979, we submitted the information requested by your May 25, 1979 letter concerning the feedwater lines at San Onofre Unit 1.

In part, you requested that we "provide any history of water hammer or vibration in the feedwater system and design changes and/or actions taken to prevent these occurrences "(Item 4 under "Preservice/Inservice Inspection and Operating History of the enclosure to your May 25, 1979 letter).

Our response referenced the report entitled "Report Concerning Susceptability to Steam Generator Feedwater Line Water Hammer Events, San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1, December, 1977," submitted in Docket No. 50-206 by letter dated December 27, 1977.

By letter dated June 19, 1979, we provided the NRC, Office of Inspec tion and Enforcement, Region V, with a two week written followup report in connection with our prompt notification of a failed shock suppressor found during the recent maintenance outage which began June 1, 1979.

As part of our investi gation to determine the cause of the failure, we reported that water hammers were detected on May 14, 1979 following a trip from full power, and that the shock suppressor failure appears to be associated with the occurrence of these water hammers.

Since these water hammers are not addressed in the aforementioned report submitted in response to Item 4 under "Preservice/Inservice Inspection and Operating History" of the enclosure to your May 25, 1979 letter, enclosed for your consideration in connection with your review of our June 18, 1979 letter is a copy of our June 19, 1979 letter to NRC, Region V.

The pertinent information and the actions taken as described in the enclosed letter are pro vided as supplemental information to that submitted by our June 18, 1979 letter.

Mr. D. L. Ziemann, NRC July 3, 1979 If you have any questions, or require further information concerning this matter, please contact me.

Very truly yours, Enclosure
