Dear Mr. Baskin:

SUBJECT:

RECERTIFICATION OF CHARGING PUMP MOTOR (TAC NO. 69585)

Re:

San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 1 By letter dated December 29, 1988, Southern California Edison Company (SCE) submitted a response to the NRC request for additional information dated November 22, 1988 regarding the recertification, rewinding or replacement of the charging pump motors at San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 (SONGS-1). Enclosure 1 to the SCE letter is a Westinghouse (the manufacturer) report dated September 14, 1988 which provides the evaluation of the continuous operation of the motors.

The charging pump motor thermal, mechanical and insulation design and construc tion were evaluated by Westinghouse and the results are submitted in this report. The analysis concludes that the motors have an adequate margin and can operate at 700HP with 1.15 service factor continuously. One of the motors was rewound in 1972 after a major incident when the pump seized. Supporting records and some data regarding the rewinding of this motor are not available as there was no requirement to retain these records at the Westinghouse repair facility.

The NRC staff has reviewed and discussed the SCE submittal and reached the conclusion that the SCE proposal to operate the south charging pump motor G-8B through Cycle 10 is acceptable provided that the motor is rewound or replaced by a qualified motor at the end of the fuel cycle.
