REGION V 1990 N CALIFORNIA BOULEVARD SUITE 202, WALNUT CREEK PLAZA WALNUT CREEK, CALIFORNIA 94596 Docket 4o. 50-206 Southern California Edison Company P. 0. Box 800

  • 2244 Walnut Grove Avenue 7

Rosemead, California 91770 Attention: Dr. L. T. Papay Vice President, Advancedr Engineering, Gentlemen.

Think you for your letter dated September 30, 1980 informing us, of the steps you have taken to correct items which we brought to your attention in Appendix A,, Significant Appraisal Findings, to our Tetter dated.

August. 15, 1980.

In general, your proposed corrective actions with respect to the items identified during, the special Health Physics Appraisal appear to represent, a-positive approach to. correcting the identified weaknesses' thereby strengthening your overall health physics program..

We will. evaluate your progress in these areas during subsequent inspections.

On October 24, 1980, this, office expressed concern to, Mr. J., Curran,.

Plant. Manager, SONGS, relative to-the dates of' implementation of certain proposed corrective actions identified in your September 30 letter. On November 4, 1980,, Mr. R. Brunet,, Superintendent,, SONGS, Unit I, responded, to. our concerns, by telephone.

He ihformed us that the comprehensive health physics training and retrainingq program, discussed-on page 6 of the enclosure to your-letter of September 30, 1980, would be implemented by May 1981 rather thar August 198T.

Further we were informed that the emergency training, discussed. on, page 27 of the previously identified enclosure,, would be accomplished prior to the return of Unit I to service following the present outage..

We believe-that these revised commitments are. appropriately responsive to our concerns.

Your cooperation with, us, is appreciated.

Sincerely, cc:

R. H. Engel ken R. Dietch Director J. Ht. Curran ILm.
